There are some pieces that are just essential to a work wardrobe. Just as the “LBD” is staple look for going out, so are the pieces I’ve curated below – all from H&M. H&M is typically one of the first stores I turn to when looking to amp up my business style on a budget. They’re always collaborating with cutting-edge designers so the new styles for each season stay fresh and modern – perfect for any young professional.
A Loose Fit Silk Pant –
I LOVE a silk, loose pant for work. You can wear these basically all year long. Pair with a chunky knit sweater in the winter, blazer in the spring, tank in the summer, and a blouse in the fall. They’re so comfy and the silk material comes across very polished & professional.
A Long Blazer –
Obviously a blazer instantly transforms an outfit into a truly professional look. I much prefer a long blazer as opposed to the cropped or boy-fit versions. The long blazer really elongates the torso and definitely looks more modern & fashion forward. It’s great if you can have several differently colored blazers. I have a burnt orange (great for fall), pale pinks, navy, black, etc. But if you can’t swing several right now, I would absolutely recommend adding a black one to start!
A Silk Print Dress –
There’s nothing easier to throw on for a rushed Monday morning than a simple printed dress. The black & white pattern is so on trend right now, but also stands as a classic color combo that will never go out of style. I like that this dress is loose from the body and provides enough coverage to keep it professional in the office.
Handbag –
A simple & structured handbag is necessary for the office. You never know when you might be called to join a work lunch or make a quick on-site, with a client, etc. It’s important to have a professional bag that can safely fit a file folder, iPad, and whatever else you might need to tote along.
Ballet Flats –
While a lot of women may argue that it’s more important to own a great pair of power heels, I wouldn’t say that they are more essential than a classy pair of flats. I agree, heels definitely add height and maybe even a bit more of a take-charge attitude to your style. But if you have a busy work day ahead of you, flats are undoubtedly the more comfortable and efficient choice. I love these black quilted ones from H&M. They look so classic and the black with gold accents reads professional.
Silk Blouse –
Another work wardrobe essential is a simple blouse. Nothing is as versatile as a solid silk blouse. This is great all year round as well. You can style it in so many ways, with pants, skirts, sweaters, blazers, alone, etc. Plus, I feel so luxe when the silk quality is really high end. And when you feel good, you exude the confidence necessary for the office environment. This is totally something I would want to have on during the day of a big presentation (sans leather skirt)!
If you’re working with a limited budget and really trying to amp up your work style, I would highly recommend these essential pieces. They’re all very polished and versatile – perfect to mix & match throughout the long work week.
